Job Title: Building Deconstruction Crew Member
Hours: Four ten-hour days, Monday-Thursday.
Location: Jobs will be in rural and urban areas throughout western Montana. So far we have jobs in Missoula, Hamilton, Corvallis and Philipsburg.
Start Date: March 14, 2023 and later.
Duration: Seasonal, likely through the end of October 2023, and possibly later if interested.
Start Pay: $22-30 an hour based on experience, effort, and particular job. Travel pay includes partial travel time on far away jobs, per diem, lodging and/or camping. One of the first projects is six weeks and $30 an hour.
Job Description:
Building deconstruction involves taking buildings apart for the highest materials reuse possible with the use of labor and occasional heavy machinery. This season it includes deconstructing barns, homes, and other structures within a mostly 1-hour radius of Missoula. It can be dirty, hard work that is very rewarding, as you are keeping materials out of the landfill and burn-pile. There are four ten-hour days a week that usually start at 7 a.m., using a lot of hand labor, muscle, and strategic tools. For out of town jobs, travel is usually just three nights a week, and lodging is close to the work site.
Qualities must include:
A commitment to performing work safely, logically, and with flexibility.
Being dependable, motivated, and have a positive attitude.
A strong attention to detail, and have a commitment to producing excellent quality work.
Enjoy working independently and is self-directed, but also a good team player.
An ability to lift and maneuver loads of 50+ pounds and handle tools for ten-hour days.
Being able to work hard in any weather, including cold, rain, sun, wind, etc.
Strength and stamina to pry and hammer materials apart.
Coordination to move wood safely, with good balance and focus.
An ability to work in sometimes dusty and dirty conditions is important (protective gear provided).
Good communication skills.
Capacity to handle repetitive tasks.
An ability to handle multi-stage tasks with many variables, asking questions when needed.
A desire to preserve materials and make them reusable again.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Removing all parts of a building, including roofing, siding, walls, and flooring with hand and power tools.
Performing heavy labor, including prying, pulling, hammering, carrying wood and materials, moving equipment, etc.
De-nailing wood for reuse with cats paws, hammers, pneumatic denailers, etc.
Lifting long, heavy, or awkward loads up to 50 pounds.
Setting and cleaning up work stations, tracking tools, and working safely.
May include work on a roof, ladder, in a basket or harness.
May include work at our lumberyard which involves preparing wood for resale and other tasks to make the yard function well.
Other duties as needed to get the job completed as determined by the supervisor.

Necessary Experience:
Previous experience with labor or an interest and passion for working hard.
An ability to operate a diversity of basic tools including hammers, skill saws, drills, etc.
Has performed physical labor in a variety of outdoor conditions.
Helpful Experience (not necessary, but a bonus):
Deconstructing buildings and preparing materials for reuse.
Proficient in use of a chainsaw, sawzall, and other tools.
Can operate a forklift
Work in a lumberyard, construction, or similar field.
First aid certification.
Working at heights.
